Before starting at Cohere, Gomez was a researcher at Google Brain, a deep learning division of Google, which was led by a Nobel Prize winner, Geoffrey Hinton. Gomez also became notorious for a technical paper which he co-authored, “Attention is All You Need”. The paper was one of the stepping stones that created the foundation for many of the most capable generative AI models to this day.
His skill set could also be particularly useful for Rivian as the EV maker also navigates a new $5.8 billion joint venture with Volkswagen Group in order to develop software for their license existing intellectual property rights to the joint venture.
It’s also possible for the joint venture to sell its tech to other companies in the future. Rivian has also been working on an AI assistant since 2023. As it was reported by Rivian’s chief software officer Wassym Bensaid for TechCrunch. The AI work, which is also responsible for the orchestration layer or framework for an AI assistant, also sits outside the joint venture with VW.
Gomez’s expertise in AI and as a data scientist is clearly interesting for Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe who also noted that “noted in a statement that his “thinking and expertise will support Rivian as we integrate new, cutting-edge technologies into our products, services, and manufacturing.”, as reported by TechCrunch.
