All these happened on Thursday, when the first report was filed around 1 p.m. The Google Maps outage affected the map itself, which didn’t load properly, along with the list of places, which failed to appear for users. Of course, the whole navigation system was compromised because the main components, the Google map and the places list, did not work.
For some users, the app failed to load and did not display any map or driving directions. However, for others, the app also displayed an error message indicating that it was unable to reach its servers.
It should be mentioned that the Google Outage happened only for the mobile version of the app, on both iOS and Android services, while the web version functioned as normal for all users.
A couple of hours later, a Google spokesperson declared that the company is actively working to resolve the Google outage as soon as possible, to restore all the app operations.
In the first place, the Google Maps outage was detected only for the Chicago area, but quickly after, more reports were coming from other U.S. cities such as Portland, Boston, New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
Quickly after the Google spokesperson's statement, users declared that the Android mobile app issues were resolved, and the app was working properly. But for the iOS version, things were a little bit harder, and around 3 p.m., Google Maps declared that the iOS version was back and ready to provide driving directions.
Google Maps hasn’t had an outage for quite some time, and users were not used to these kinds of problems. We don’t know for sure if this outage will affect the giant in the long term, considering the fact that users needed to access other apps for directions. Google Maps is considered an important app for U.S. users. Now, Google Maps might lose some users due to this recent outage.
Stay tuned for more updates!
