Well, it’s important to know that both the GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20b are available to be downloaded from platforms such as Databricks, Hugging Face, Azure, and also on AWS. For those users who want to download one or even both versions of GPT-OSS from AWS, these can be found under the Apache 2.0 license, which gives them the opportunity to customize it for commercial use. This Apache 2.0 license allows users to use these models and benefit from them without needing to pay a fee directly to OpenAI.
This new OpenAI launch represents an important one for this artificial intelligence company, due to the fact that these two GPT-OSS versions are the first “open” language models released since the launch of GPT-2, which was about 6 years ago.
According to the company’s statement, both GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20b are capable of handling users' queries, but for more complex prompts, these models will send them directly to the AI models in the cloud.
So, the two models GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20b are capable of browsing the web for users, writing code, and even operating some agents using the existing APIs from OpenAI.
“I think a lot of people are actually surprised to know that the vast majority of our customers are already using a lot of open models. We wanted to plug that gap and allow them to use our technology across the board.”, the OpenAI researcher, Chris Cook, stated during a recent media briefing.
If the open model is not capable of handling a certain query or task, users will have the option to connect it to one of OpenAI’s closed models in order to have the best outcome possible.
It’s true that up until now, the OpenAI company has prioritized the development of closed artificial intelligence models. But now, the demand and the rivalry have significantly increased, because other companies such as DeepSeek, Alibaba, or even Moonshot, are already popular thanks to their open models powered by artificial intelligence.
“Going back to when we started in 2015, OpenAI’s mission is to ensure AGI that benefits all of humanity. To that end, we are excited for the world to be building on an open AI stack created in the United States, based on democratic values, available for free to all and for wide benefit.”, Sam Altam, the OpenAI CEO, stated.
While the training data has not been disclosed, the OpenAI company is reassuring that both GPT-OSS versions are the most trained and tested models. So, these can’t be used for other bad purposes but only to help users with their daily tasks.
