Even though Amazon didn't provide a valid reason for discontinuing the Amazon Android app store, the announcement confirms that the app store will continue to be available on Fire TVs and also on Amazon Tablet devices.
“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025,”, Amazon stated in the announcement.
Apps downloaded from the Amazon app store on all Android devices will not disappear on August 20 after the app store will no longer be available. But it’s important to know that they may stop working without the necessary updates, as the company stated.
“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,”, an Amazon spokesperson stated.
It’s true that the ending of Android support represents a surprising move, due to the fact that the Fire OS from Amazon has an Android base. But in the recent period, the Amazon Play Store experienced fewer users than usual. Amazon tried to draw more users with different promotions such as “test drive” for apps in web browsers or free app promotions, but it seems that all the efforts didn’t have the expected outcome.
