Even more so, the authorization comes as a result of a standoff that happened earlier last week, where the Reasury’s highest-ranking career official exited the department as a result of Musk’s requests from the team to have access to the system.
Wyden reported in the social media post, referring to Doge’s actions that “Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk’s own companies. All of it”.
A day earlier, the system that has been run by the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, governes the spending of almost 6$ trillion federal funds to American households, also including Social Security and Medicare benefits, payments to the US federal employees, contractors as well as tax refunds. All this information was made available in a letter written by Wyden which was sent to Bessent a day earlier.
The letter stated that the payment system “simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy.”
Even more so, the New York Times also said that Bessent granted doge access to the Treasury’s payment system on Friday. Tom Krause, the chief executive of Cloud Software Group, which also owns Citrix and other companies, is said to be the DOGE representative who was granted access.
It is also worth mentioning that, this is one of Musk’s latest reported efforts when it comes to taking over the inner workings of the US federal government after President Donald Trump occupied the position. After Donald Trump’s return to the Whitehouse, the president immediately ordered Musk to start widespread cuts to federal government spending.
