The French startup has gained interest by emphasizing its European roots and gaining trust from President Emmanuel Macron. It distinguishes itself further by open-sourcing certain models, unlike OpenAI and Alphabet (GOOGL.O).
Mistral stands as Europe’s strongest bid for an independent AI powerhouse, but it has yet to catch up with international competitors in market share and earnings compared to the leading AI companies.
With a $6.2 billion valuation from venture capitalists, Mistral could find an opportunity to close the gap with wealthier competitors if the industry moves away from its focus on scaling up.
AI Reasoning models use a chain-of-thought method to solve complex problems by breaking them down into smaller, logical steps.
Mistral’s alternative to ChatGPT, Le Chat, has been available on Android and iOS, and it has reached 1 million downloads since its launch on mobiles. This event meant occupying the first place in France’s iOS App Store downloads.
Besides its artificial intelligence reasoning model, Mistral has a vast range of models, including:
- The primary large language model, Mistral Large 2
- Pixtral Large, with multimodal language capabilities, is part of the Pixtral family of multimodal models.
- Mistral Medium 3, ideal for coding and STEM tasks, promises both efficiency and performance
- Devstral, a suited tool for writing code, is available for use without restriction.
- Codestral is an earlier generative AI model for coding, but one that was licensed for non-commercial use only.
- “Les Ministraux”, a family of models designed for mobiles and edge devices.
- Mistral Saba is designed to address Arabic-speaking countries.
Although many of Mistral AI's products remain free or include complimentary tiers, the company aims to generate revenue through paid subscriptions to Le Chat, launched in February 2025. Le Chat’s Pro plan is available for $14.99 per month.
