This social media app called Vine indeed shut down in 2017, after just 7 years of activity, but its viral content creators remained a cultural icon, not only in the U.S. but also around the world, because based on their Vine popularity, they were able to develop careers in different related fields.
Numerous popular Viners shifted their talent towards other careers, such as film, television, or entertainment.
But let’s see which popular Viners had a great success also in the Hollywood industry.
Liza Koshy is a popular content creator who had a great career on Vine based on her funny and expressive videos that attracted a lot of new followers. After Vine shut down, she decided to create a new career on YouTube, because its video streaming platform allowed a higher limit on video uploads.
Shortly after her debut on YouTube, she also wanted to experience the mainstream entertainment industry and started doing voice acting. Also, she hosted the Double Dare reboot show from Nickelodeon, and starred in different movies such as “Work It”, “Players”, and “Family Affair”.
Quinta was a Vine content creator popular for her funny and relatable videos, which featured different real situations. She used to make a series of viral videos based on the same or similar themes, such as the “He got money” series, which quickly attracted a lot of views and followers.
After Vine disappeared from the social media radar, Quinta Brunson joined the BuzzFeed Video team on writing and production. She also created a sketch comedy show, called “A Black Ladu Sketch Show,” televised on HBO, a show that really developed her career towards Hollywood.
So, after her TV show debut, she starred in Abbott Elementary, a sitcom that earned an Emmy Award.
Popular for his comedic Vine content, Melvin Gregg had a smooth transition from Vine to television and film. He didn’t continue his short video form career on YouTube as other popular Vine content creators did; he chose to play different roles in series and movies. He starred in a Netflix mockumentary called “American Vandal” and also played in “High Flying Bird” released in 2018.
More so, he appeared in the popular series “Snowfall”, where he played the role of Drew “Manboy” Miller.
Rudy didn’t become popular for the usual full of comedy Vines; instead, he attracted his followers and popularity with music-based videos. In a platform where almost everyone was making funny videos, he tried to stand out with his beatboxing talent and also with his piano skills.
Shortly after Vine shut down, he started different music collaborations with big artists such as Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth to make YouTube videos. These types of videos were a great success, and made him noticeable to the Amazon Studios team. During the collaboration with Amazon Studios, he was a co-writer for the “Música” movie, which was launched in 2024.
Andrew Bachelor, also known as King Bach, was a famous Viner who was popular online thanks to his funny six-second Vine videos. Shortly after his Vine popularity, he decided to use this social presence in order to develop his career in acting.
So, he played in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, a movie with international success, and also in “The Babysitter.”
He also continued his acting career and took it further, becoming a writer, director, and producer, sharing his comic ideas in different productions.
Like the majority of popular Viners, Cameron Dallas was known internationally due to his comedic skits that quickly won users' hearts. So, he saw that he had a chance in entertainment and mainstream, so, after Vine broke the news, he started to build his fame by playing in series and movies.
He starred in a movie called Expelled, but this movie was released before Vine shut down. He also played in Charing Cameron, the reality television series. But he didn’t stop at acting, because he tried to improve his music career by releasing multiple singles, with performances mostly in the U.S.
One of the first popular Viners, Brittany made herself known for his funny videos, which featured her fearless comedic style. This approach was a great magnet for followers, who were, back then, eager to see her comedic short videos.
Her career on Vine was a real success, but because every good thing has an end, so does her career. After Vine, she appeared in different TV shows and some movies, such as “We Are Your Friends”, “ Spy Intervention”, “The Dirt”, and many others.
Now, she remains active by talking on different podcasts and getting involved in various projects on social media.
Why only some popular Viners managed to continue their careers?
This is an interesting topic, because there isn’t necessarily a perfect formula that can be used for a career to work. For someone, their success now is based on the fact that they made the right choices at the right time.
As stated above, some of them had the opportunity to collaborate or play in different projects after Vine shut down, but some chose to continue their Vine career on YouTube. We can see that they didn’t have the same path, but still succeeded.
