Since last year, the Canadian government began to review the Canada TikTok plan which expected to invest and also expand their business in the country. It should be mentioned that according to Canadian laws, the government is able to examine the potential risks to national security that come from various external investments, for example, the Chinese-owned TikTok. Also, Canadian laws are focused on preventing the government from revealing more details about these funds.
"The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada's security and intelligence community and other government partners,", the Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne also stated.
In response to the Canadian government's decision, TikTok, which is owned by the parent company ByteDance, states that the company is planning to dispute this Canada TikTok order in court.
A TikTok Canada spokesperson has made a statement about this situation and declared that "Shutting down TikTok's Canadian offices and destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone's best interest, and today's shutdown order will do just that,".
The Canadian government's main reason for shutting down the TikTok Canadian business is that TikTok has an unacceptably high level of risk in privacy and security.
It’s important to mention that Canada has previously banned the TikTok social media platform from all government-issued mobile devices due to security and privacy concerns. Even though the social media platform is very popular among young people, many countries fear that ByteDance might collect data about Western users.
