Donald Trump has given TikTok a deadline of June 19 to close a deal with a U.S. owner to maintain the app available for U.S. users. If the parent Chinese company, ByteDance, does not close a deal by this deadline, the social media platform, with 170 million American users, will eventually face a TikTok ban.
"I would ... I'd like to see it done," the recently elected U.S. President stated in his interview with NBC News.
It seems that Donald Trump prefers this social media platform and makes significant efforts to support it and keep it from experiencing a TikTok ban.
“Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” he also stated in his recent interview.
It should be mentioned that TikTok has received two deadline extensions in order to remain available in the U.S. territory. The first TikTok ban happened in January this year when the social media platform was banned for about 12 hours because it had passed the initial deadline that Joe Biden imposed. Even though the TikTok ban lasted for about 12 hours, the social media platform has been removed from the Apple and Google stores for a longer time.
After the first TikTok ban, Donald Trump has given the social media platform a 75-day extension, but with a twist. This time, ByteDance was slightly pressured to sell TikTok along with CapCut to a non-Chinese buyer in order to keep all their operations available.
Different major companies in the U.S. have expressed their interest in buying the TikTok social media app, but the Chinese company didn’t see a true benefit from these deals. The first deadline that TikTok received was in April when the company was forced to find a suitable deal. Back then, the U.S. President decided to give a new TikTok ban delay for 75 days, which is due on June 19.
According to different sources, there is an ongoing TikTok deal now that is about to be closed, but due to the recently imposed tariffs for China, this deal has been experiencing different issues. So it seems that in a positive context, the Chinese owner, ByteDance, will be able to close an advantageous deal for both parties until the TikTok deadline, which is due on June 19.
Even more so, Trump is not planning to stop these Chinese tariffs in the near future, but it seems that he is willing to lower them in order to support the ByteDance deal.
"At some point, I'm going to lower them because otherwise, you could never do business with them. And they want to do business very much,", Trump stated.
