lphabet’s Waymo, together with Toyota Motor, said on Wednesday that they will be exploring collaboration options on the development of a new autonomous
vehicle platform and see how they can enhance next-generation personally owned vehicles.
Toyota will build the platform, which will be deployed in Waymo’s autonomous vehicle fleet, as it was reported by a Waymo spokesperson. The companies will also look deeper into how they can leverage Waymo’s AV technology for Toyota’s POVs, the spokesperson reported.
The two companies have stated that “The companies aim to further accelerate the development and adoption of driver assistance and automated driving technologies for POVs,".
The car manufacturers have also said that they previously discussed the possibility of expanding the scope and the cooperation, adding that Toyota’s autonomous driving technology unit, Woven by Toyota, will also join the potential collaboration.
It is also worth mentioning that Waymo has been focusing its presence through partnerships with automakers such as Hyundai and Zeeker and other important ride-hailing companies such as Uber. The spokesperson also mentioned that the plans with Hyundai and Zeeker will remain in place.
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, also said last week that people might be able to own Waymo’s self-driving taxis in the near future.
