Global spending on cloud-based solutions, vendors, and infrastructure is expected to surpass $1 trillion for the first time ever in 2024. This is huuuge!

This expansion is mostly driven by our need to continuously seek opportunities that are both time and money-saving and improve efficiency in our processes. Adopting such technologies by leading companies and various businesses from all industries only shows that this might be the key to becoming more innovative and successful. The VP Analyst for Garter stated:

“Current inflationary pressures and macroeconomic conditions are having a push and pull effect on cloud spending. Cloud computing will continue to be a bastion of safety and innovation, supporting growth during uncertain times due to its agile, elastic, and scalable nature.”

So, what are the cloud computing trends in 2024? How will these trends shape the future of how companies store their data? Let’s find out!

1. AI As-A-Service and Citizen Developer

Cloud-based solutions are vital in making artificial intelligence technologies available to everyone. But in 2024, we will see a shift towards simplifying cloud services for non-technical people, democratizing cloud computing. This introduces the concept of Citizen Developers – those of us who don’t know how to code or haven’t spent years getting a degree in Computer Science.

For this reason, we expect to see leading companies – AWS, Microsoft, and Google – release tools that allow everyone to create complex products using low-code/no-code features. Microsoft’s Power Platform is usually the go-to service for many of us, with Power Apps, Power AI, Power Flow, and Power Builder – allowing us to build applications and automate workflows.

2. Hybrid and Multi-Clouds

A major cloud-based solutions trend in 2024 will be implementing a multi-cloud strategy. In fact, in 2024, it is predicted that there will be a rise in the number of organizations purchasing cloud services from multiple providers – from 76% to 85%.

But it makes sense! As cloud resources become increasingly expensive, organizations continuously seek ways to minimize wasteful cloud space. This way, they can both save money and be more efficient. To do that, we are more likely to optimize hybrid or multi-clouds. For example, we might use one cloud-based platform to manage customer relations and another to host their company website and e-commerce platform. This way, we can access tools that might otherwise be too expensive and set up in on-premises systems.

3. ChatGPT and Cloud-Based Solutions

Yes, ChatGPT is not directly connected to cloud computing. However, ChatGPT’s algorithm can work with cloud infrastructure to provide multiple services. OpenAI has launched the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service exactly for this purpose. For this reason, we can use ChatGPT inside the cloud for various tasks, automation, or processes.

Here is how we can use ChatGPT within cloud-based solutions:

  • Generation of code
  • Improved interaction between AI technologies and humans
  • Analyzing and providing a summary of vast amounts of information

4. Real-Time Cloud Infrastructure

Nowadays, there is an increased demand for leveraging real-time data to get immediate insights rather than waiting for the platform to update its numbers. For this reason, real-time cloud infrastructure will be one of the most anticipated cloud computing trends in 2024. This drive comes from how we consume streamed data in our daily lives – as seen in our preference for instant gratification through services like Netflix and YouTube.

This allows organizations to improve their operations by having access to real-time feedback, dealing with fluctuations, and providing immediate responses. Think about it! In important industries like transportation, it can detect possible anomalies early on, resulting in increased safety measures and reduced costs.

This is also connected to another cloud service trend, edge computing. This allows for developing smaller, more efficient algorithms combined with advanced 5G networks. Edge computing is also based on the idea that information should be processed as physically close as the place where the data was collected. This is extremely necessary in the health and medicine industries.

5. Cloud Services with Serverless and Pay-As-You-Go Models

Serverless cloud services provide backend infrastructure for each user without the need to manage our server personally. Instead, the cloud provider will handle code execution. Even more so, a typical cloud-based solution will charge us for the number of servers we want to host our infrastructure in a fixed format. However, under a serverless cloud, we would only pay for the needed resources and when our code runs.

This is an incredible advancement for a startup at the beginning of its road or a company with limited resources. The absence of a system administration will lead to cost-effectiveness, reduced liability, and easier operations management.

From real-time infrastructure to serverless models, cloud computing is going through some fascinating advancements that will shape our future.

However, with all these advancements in cloud-based solutions, one thing is clear: the digital infrastructure is working to create more accessible solutions for everyone. So, it will be exciting to watch how businesses will leverage these cloud computing trends to their advantage.
