Perplexity, run by Aravind Srinivas, is an artificial intelligence engine that gives up-to-date and well-documented answers to any questions people have. Recently, this AI answer engine launched its new web browser named Comet. Comet follows the traditional process of an intelligent decision-making engine, but in a more interactive and goal-oriented way. If Perplexity manages to make the Chrome acquisition, it will exponentially increase its chances of competing with larger companies like OpenAI.
This offer was proposed after the United States Department of Justice suggested that Google should sell Chrome due to violations of the antitrust laws that the company was accused of last year.
The judge in the case stated that Google had control over the whole advertising market, limiting the chances of other companies to compete in this field. Moreover, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland also said ’’...Google has used anticompetitive, exclusionary, and unlawful conduct to eliminate or severely diminish any threat to its dominance over digital advertising technologies.”
Google disagreed and refused to sell Chrome, but hasn’t divulged how the situation will be handled. DOJ insisted that by selling Chrome, it would create a truly equal search engine market for all competitors.
Besides proposing the Chrome acquisition, Perplexity also attempted to make an offer for TikTok, which is known as the most popular social media app. The artificial intelligence company aimed to join TikTok to provide political solutions and to address U.S. fears and concerns about Chinese ownership of the app.
