The spokesperson added that “Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world,” had been written via an email “We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable,” the spokesperson added.
Lately, Google has made multiple changes in order to align itself with the current political environment. Even more so, Google has begun lately scrapping its diversity hiring goals, cupping the last position when it comes to changing its approach to hiring, as a result of the election of President Donald Trump. It is also worth mentioning that Trump’s first act after becoming president was to sign an executive order that ended the government’s DEI programs and name federal officials overseeing the initiatives on leave.
Yet, those were not the only changes that Google Maps made lately. In January, Google said that it would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”, which happened. Even more so, Google also changed the name for the mountains in Alaska that are yet called Denali, to “Mount McKinley”.
The company also removed other events such as November 1 which was the start of the Indigenous People Month. Google’s spokesperson also added that the company “returned to showing only public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com globally, while allowing users to manually add other important moments.”.
