Now the U.S. giants, Google and Apple, need to analyze Germany’s request in order to decide if DeepSeek indeed needs to be banned from the Google and Apple app stores. We don’t know for sure when both U.S. giants are going to make a final decision, but due to the fact that the privacy concerns represent an important aspect, this decision will probably be announced as soon as possible.
It seems that in DeepSeek’s privacy policies, there are various rules that state the fact that this artificial intelligence model collects and stores different personal data from users, such as uploaded files and inputs, on Chinese computers.
"DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union. Chinese authorities have far-reaching access rights to personal data within the sphere of influence of Chinese companies," the data protection commissioner stated.
When asked about this situation, the DeepSeek AI model did not respond to Reuters.
Even more so, this decision to ban DeepSeek AI from both Apple and Google App stores is based on the fact that Meike Kamp asked the AI model last month to change its policy in order to comply with the requirements that the non-EU data transfer deal imposed. But, fast forward to the present, DeepSeek did not follow the requirements and is now potentially facing a ban in Germany.
DeepSeek was indeed launched only a couple of months ago, at the beginning of the year, but numerous countries and organizations have considered prohibiting its use due to data privacy concerns. At that time, DeepSeek was considered to be a powerful rival to the existing AI models in the industry, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and many companies have been impressed by this new artificial intelligence model because it was created at a much lower cost compared with others in the industry.
Now, DeepSeek is banned in Italy based on the use of data concerns, as well as in the Netherlands, which decided to remove it from all government devices. Also, the Belgian government advised its officials to avoid using this AI model in order to maintain all the information and data fully protected. Besides all of these countries, many others are closely monitoring this Chinese model in order to make sure that no data is being stored on Chinese computers.
