Community Notes found on the X social media app. So, TikTok announced Wednesday that this new “Footnotes” TikTok feature is specially created to give users the option to add further descriptions or content to videos in order to help followers have a better understanding of certain videos or content.
Available for testing in the U.S. for now, the new TikTok feature has the goal of helping all TikTok users understand how authentic certain videos are.
This new “Footnotes feature” does almost the same thing as the features from Facebook or X social media platform, and uses a bridge-oriented scoring system that was created to determine a middle agreement between users who have different opinions on a subject.
The TikTok system gives the option for users who have different viewpoints to write footnotes and vote for certain footnotes if they are helpful in the TikTok community. It’s important to mention that a certain footnote becomes visible to its wider TikTok community after it’s labeled as helpful and is considered to add valuable additional information to a certain TikTok video.

After that, the general TikTok community can contribute with their vote on a Footnote and mark it as helpful in certain cases. According to the social media platform, TikTok's new feature is considered to improve over time as the number of footnotes increases.
It’s important to know that while other TikTok features, such as Duet or Stitch, offer the opportunity for users to have a dialogue based on a video, this feature was created to share the user’s expertise while contributing valuable information or details to improve credibility. As the social media app suggests, Footnotes can be really useful in those cases when certain videos speak about more complex subjects or can include deceiving information.
This social media platform has been pointed out multiple times for spreading misinformation on popular subjects such as elections or health. So, with this new feature, TikTok’s goal is to help avoid potential issues with its content by allowing users to add context to TikTok videos.
Well, all U.S. users can apply now to be a part of the Footnotes community and contribute their information, but it’s required to be at least 18 years old before joining this community. Also, users who want to be a part of Footnots' community are required to have their account open for more than six months and have no history of violating different community guidelines of the TikTok social media app recently.
