Well, these electric vehicles that will be purchased by Uber will feature the autonomous vehicle system created by Nuro. With the technology from Nuro and the EVs from Lucid, Uber will also own and operate all the cars.
We don’t know for sure the exact date when this premium robotaxi service will be launched, as it’s just a plan right now, but the Uber ride-sharing company stated that it will probably be available starting from next year.
Even if the Lucid electric vehicles are not currently in the manufacturing process, they are scheduled to be produced in late 2026.
It should be mentioned that, besides the fact that the Uber investment in Lucid EV maker has been disclosed, the investment made in Nuro remains unknown, as a remarkable sum of money. Some sources state that the agreement with Nuro is significantly bigger compared with the one made between Uber and Lucid.
“I think that’s probably a reflection of how meaty it is. We were thrilled that, at the end of all that, we were the partner that was chosen,” Dave Ferguson, the co-founder and president of Nuro, stated for TechCrunch.
It seems that various engineers from both the Nuro and Lucid companies have started some tests on a driverless vehicle. The President and Co-Founder of Nuro has high hopes for this agreement, because the Lucid electric vehicles already have an integrated automated driving system, which allows the drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and eyes off the road in certain situations.
So, the technology is already there, but it may take some time until it is fully developed for unassisted robotaxi services.
