the Meta Reality Labs department but also other employees who work for Oculus Studios, which is responsible for developing different games and apps for the popular Meta Quest headsets.
The Reality Labs department from the Meta group managed all the virtual and augmented reality projects for the company and represents an important division during this time when technology is evolving rapidly every day.
It should be mentioned that the company didn’t exactly say how many employees are affected by the Meta layoffs, but we know for sure that it has a significant impact also on the employees who are working for different Quest products, VR exercise apps, and Supernatural.
Supernatural represents quite a new addition to the Meta portfolio, because in 2023 Meta purchased the company Within, which represents the company that makes this Supernatural feature for the Meta Quest products.
“Some teams within Oculus Studios are undergoing shifts in structure and roles that have impacted team size. These changes are meant to help Studios work more efficiently on future mixed reality experiences for our growing audience, while still delivering great content for people today.”, Meta company said in a recent statement for TechCrunch.
According to Meta, it seems that the Reality Labs division represents a significant cost for the company, and has recorded a loss of about $5 billion in Q4 of 2024. The Reality Labs department managed to generate only $1 billion in revenue sales, so, the cost of maintaining it is significantly higher compared to the generated sales.
The Meta layoffs announcement comes shortly before the first quarter earnings report of the company, which is scheduled to be announced next week. The next earnings report will be able to display exactly the cost of the Reality Labs department.
According to the Meta statement, all the employees who were impacted by the Meta layoffs will soon have the option to apply for different job roles within the company.
But these Reality Labs layoffs can affect users? Yes, for the Supernatural feature users, the layoffs mean that the department will launch fewer new workouts. But it should be mentioned that every workout will feature many skill levels in order to make the exercise more enjoyable and interesting.
Even more so, the Supernatural department stated in a Facebook post for its community that all the coaches who manage this workout app, will not be affected by these Meta layoffs.
